Attention Windows NT, 2000 and XP users! You do not have MS-DOS or MS-DOS based Windows. Please choose an appropriate newsgroup, such as: news:alt.msdos.batch.nt http://groups.google.com/groups?as_ugroup=alt.msdos.batch.nt (Despite the hierarchic misplacement, a.m.b.nt specializes in the discussion of batch files for Microsoft's NT based product line, which includes Windows 2000 and XP.) news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.win2000.cmdprompt.admin news://news.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsnt.misc news://news.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general news:alt.os.windows.xp http://groups.google.com/groups?as_ugroup=alt.os.windows.xp
Dear readers, This is not a FAQ, it is a meta-FAQ, i.e. a list of pointers to FAQs and related information about MS-DOS batch files. It is aimed at people new to MS-DOS batch file programming, but may be of interest to other DOS users. Please, before posting your MS-DOS batch question: 1) Check the questions and answers in the current messages of news:alt.msdos.batch to see if your question is already answered. 2) Search Google or other newsgroup archive to see if your question has been previously answered in alt.msdos.batch. http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search 3) Check the resources listed in this document for tutorials, FAQs and other pertinent information. People new to DOS batch should probably start with the FAQs and Tutorials section. 4) When posting your message be sure to indicate MS-DOS version or if you are using Windows 95, 98, or ME. Include special circumstances or requirements. If you have a non-English language version, this should be indicated. - FAQs and Tutorials - http:/www.infionline.net/~wtnewton/batch/batchfaq.html Terry Newton's "Frequently Asked Questions about Batch" http://purl.oclc.org/net/Batfiles/ Laurence Soucy's "Batfile FAQ" and "Batfile Tutorial" http://www.batchfiles.co.nr/ Leonardo Pignataro's "Frequently Asked Questions" ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/link/tsbat.zip Timo Salmi's "Frequently Asked Questions about MS-DOS batches" ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/batchutil/batfaq23.zip "The Batpower FAQ, or Frequently Asked Questions" http://ericphelps.com/batch/index.htm Eric Phelps' "Windows 95 / DOS 7 Batch Programming" http://www.infionline.net/~wtnewton/batch/batguide.html Terry Newton's "Batch Guide" http://gearbox.maem.umr.edu/~batch/batchtoc.htm Ted Davis' "DOS Batch Language" http://purl.oclc.org/net/dirk/batcoll.all Dirk van Deun's "Batch Programming Elements" - Command Reference - http://www.vfrazee.com/ms-dos/6.22/help/ Vernon Frazee's "MS-DOS v6.22 Help" http://purl.oclc.org/net/msdos7/ Laurence Soucy's (formerly Bob Watson's) "Using MS-Dos7 Commands" http://2dos.homepage.dk/batutil/help/INDEX.HTM Benny Pedersen's "MS-DOS Ver 6.22 & up" - alt.msdos.batch topicality and protocol - # This group was proposed on alt.config as an ersatz for # comp.os.msdos.batch, which failed with just a few votes short. # There were no comments on my proposal. However, doing so makes it difficult for others to read the thread, especially when searching through post archives. Regardless of whether you read left-to-right or right-to-left you still read down the page. Try doing that with top-posted messages and think about your actions for other users. OE-QuoteFix has a good reputation for making it easier for Outlook Express users to quote correctly: http://home.in.tum.de/~jain/software/oe-quotefix/ http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1855.html Content of a follow-up post should exceed quoted content. ... Wait overnight to send emotional responses to messages. If you have really strong feelings about a subject, indicate it via FLAME ON/OFF enclosures. ... Avoid sending messages or posting articles which are no more than gratuitous replies to replies. ... If you include a signature keep it short. Convention stipulates no longer than 4 lines. -- This document on the web: http://purl.oclc.org/net/amb_meta-faq/ Current maintainer is Laurence Soucy. Previous maintainer, Eric Whitfield. Background of this document: The amb_Meta-FAQ has existed in various forms since its inception by Dirk van Deun, the founder of alt.msdos.batch. After a period of unavailability, Eric Whitfield, the former maintainer, suggested that I maintain the amb_Meta-FAQ and I accepted. Eric generously furnished the PURL address.
